I am so honored to have been asked to collaborate with the American Red Cross of Northeastern New York in creating a video for their Annual Fire + Ice Gala. Immediately, I was filled with all kinds of ideas on what kind of piece I wanted to produce for this incredible organization. The American Red Cross does so much globally and locally for those in need. I started to think about that connection and the people who are impacted by such incredible hardship.
“The most authentic thing about us is our capacity to create, to overcome, to endure, to transform, to love and to be greater than our suffering.”
― Ben Okri
I wanted to show the connection of humanity by using the sound (and symbol) of the heartbeat to carry us through the introduction, while addressing the massive suffering that we have felt around the world. Just in this past year we have had tragic earthquakes, wildfires, hurricanes, mudslides and mass casualties. In our own communities, we had fires, floods, mudslides and other tragedies. No matter what, no matter where, The Red Cross responds to disaster and is a sign of hope. We are the difference through donation, the gift of blood and volunteering.
In those moments of despair and disaster, we see each other as people stripped of labels and status – in those humble moments, we all are just human.
Thank you to The American Red Cross of Northeastern New York for asking me to tell this story. Thank you to all of the amazing volunteers who do this work daily and step up in the sight of tragedy. And thank you, to all the wonderful people who volunteered to be part of this film.
